High youth unemployment must be tackled, and fast | Jonathan Portes

by Nik Lemmens on April 18, 2012

In the article “High Youth Unemployment Must be Tackled, and Fast” author Jonathan Portes explains that the high rate of unemployment among youths needs to be addressed. Portes proposes that this rate, which has tripled in the last year, is not due to the usual factors of minimum wage, benefits or migrants, but rather a lack of jobs and focus on the youth that have no marketable skills. Portes goes on to suggest that government programs should be put into place to help these people, such as offering work experience and offering a part-time job after a year looking for work. He also says that the youth need to be more proactive in taking advantage of trainings being offered.
