Women @ Work Infographic | Great on the Job

by Nik Lemmens on April 14, 2012

Women are starting businesses more today than ever. Women now make up nearly half of the national workforce (47%). The most common types of businesses owned by women are healthcare/social assistance, professional/technical services, and retail. There is still a gap between men and women’s leadership in business worldwide and in the U.S. The gap is decreasing over time and in other countries it is nearly gone. For example in Norway women make up over 40% of board members of major companies.

Bit shocking to see that only 18% of patents are received by women in 2010! Where are all the women inventors?

I think that one of the major reasons why there is a very very low percentage of women becoming very successful in their careers is because not every country in the world value the intelligence of women. Even in the 21st century, many areas such as poor countries of Africa, Middle East and Asia, due to their steadfast social and cultural norms, still treat women as mere lowly housewives, or as tools for family negotiations..

For sure there are many countries that still have no so equal rights and they have preconceptions of the role of females. We are talking about the US here so the gap should not be that big but maybe some of the “equal” thinking has not spread to every household and if their partners are not supportive it is very likely some brilliant woman are not were they should be.
