How to select the right school for your personal development

Yesterday a twitter follower asked me for a recommendation for a course to do Visual Effects & Motion Graphics. However, unfortunately it is not that simple to select the right course.

The biggest factor in your personal development is to understand why you want to do a specific course. Here are some reasons

- Get access to a specific job;
– Get a promotion;
– Learn something specific;
– General interest in the subject.

All of the above are extremely valid reasons to go and get a new degree or a certificate, however, as you can imagine not every course is going to teach you your specific needs and some courses might be very technical and go well beyond what you need to quench your general interest.

Understanding and clarifying what you need is the first step in selecting a school or an institute.

Once you have narrowed down exactly what it is that you need, it is then time to find the programs that are a good fit. Most of the time you will find quite a few programs out there but in order to further narrow this down you should learn more about the teaching methods that are involved and see if they suit you. For example are you a visual learner or maybe a practical learner? You will definitely need to understand this in order to make an informed decision.

Finally, you need to make sure that the school or institute that you will be completing your degree or course at is reputable. I recently wrote an article about online scams so make sure you read that. (insert link to article?) It is also a really good idea, before you hand over any cash, to ask the school to speak to some ex-students in order to get some feedback on the specific school, course or degree.
